Theft Insurance
Standard homeowners insurance policies protect your belongings from theft, but coverage limits are low. So if you have a lot of valuable property, it may be worthwhile to look into purchasing additional coverage for the items that are expensive or difficult to replace. Some items you may want to purchase additional insurance for include:
- Boats and trailers
- Firearms
- Jewelry and furs
- Money
- Silverware.
In order to protect your personal possessions from theft, spend some time to inventory your possessions by:
- Taking pictures or making a video of your belongings
- Listing brands, models, and serial numbers
- Attaching any receipts to the inventory list. This may seem very tedious, but will help you remember exactly what you own, which could be difficult once the belongings are gone. Write down everything in each room, and be sure to update the list at least once a year.
